World Mental Health Day

‘Turn your demons into art, your shadow into a friend, your fear into fuel, your failures into teachers, your weaknesses into reasons to keep fighting. Don’t waste your pain. Recycle your heart.’ – Andrea Balt WHO recognizes World Mental Health Day on 10 October every year. It was first celebrated in 1992 at the initiative of the World Federation for Mental Health in more than 150 countries.

Its overall objective is to raise awareness of mental health issues around the world. World Mental Health Day intends to offer people a world wherein mental health matters are a priority for everyone by building consciousness at home, in school and workplace, to fight against all social stigmas.

Understanding good mental health

Your mental health influences how you think, feel, and behave in daily life. It also affects your ability to cope with stress, overcome challenges, build relationships, and recover from life’s setbacks and hardships.

People who are mentally healthy have:

  • A sense of contentment

  • A zest for living and the ability to laugh and have fun.

  • The ability to deal with stress and bounce back from adversity.

  • The flexibility to learn new skills and adapt to change.

  • A balance between work and play, rest and activity, etc.

  • The ability to build and maintain fulfilling relationships.

World Mental Health Day Themes The world is experiencing the global health emergency due to COVID-19 that has impacted on the mental health of people. The levels of anxiety, fear, isolation, social distancing and uncertainty have become widespread as the world struggles to bring the situation under control.

The World Federation for Mental Health (WFMH) takes this opportunity, to launch the World Mental Health Day campaign. The theme for this year is:

Mental Health for All Greater Investment – Greater Access

Previous themes include:

Anyone can suffer from mental or emotional health problems—and over a lifetime most of us will. We ignore the emotional messages that tell us something is wrong. We bottle up our problems in the hope that others won’t notice. Or we simply give up—telling ourselves this is “just the way we are.”

The good news is: you don’t have to feel bad. There are practices you can adopt to elevate your mood, become more resilient, and enjoy life more. But just as it requires effort to build and maintain physical health, so it is with mental health. Ways To Celebrate International Mental Health Day:

  1. Make social connection a priority—especially face-to-face

  2. Take a sincere pledge that you will give equal importance to your mental health as you extend to your physical well-being.

  3. Eliminate any negative distractions that adversely affect your emotional stability and mental health.

  4. Practice self-care by indulging yourself in at least one such habit every day that nurtures your mental health like meditation, jogging, eating healthy.

  5. Make a resolve to express yourself freely or if the need arises, seek counselling focused on your interests and needs.

  6. Do your bit to spread awareness about mental health topics .

  7. Extend support and help to other who is facing challenging times. Help them realize their value and worth

  8. Participate in your community’s initiatives to combat mental illness.

  9. Get trained in mental health first-aid or enroll yourself in a workshop so that you are empowered to help your friends and family.

  10. Eat a brain-healthy diet to support strong mental health

However, mental health services are deficient of financial and human resources in most countries, especially backward economies and developing countries. Added funding is required to promote the issue and create responsiveness about it so that it becomes a global priority. In such a scenario, the importance of world mental health day increases by many folds.

‘Let today be the day you stop living within the confines of how others define or judge you.’ – Steve Maraboli

Mental disorders affect quite a considerable percentage of the world’s inhabitants. It is high time we should all unite to address these issues and destroy any taboo linked to it.
